The best way to organize digital photos and save them for my kids?

stephanie5 asked:

What is the easiest software to save, organize, and share my digital photos? Does anyone have a great idea for organizing the hard copies of my photos?

Well Steffi, you have really hit on what I consider the Achilles heel of digital photography. Archiving. In the past, burning everything to CDs was considered the norm, but now with the cost of external hard drives at rock bottom, many prefer to store by that method. Personally, I keep mine on CD, but I realize even that is not considered a long term medium. Keeping them in proper storage is a help though.

There are also people who make multiple back ups of photos. Either on more than one external hard drive, or on multiple discs, stored in different locations.

I look at it this way. It is all an electronic medium, and we all know only too well how things become obsolete with time. I think no matter how you store them, you will have to, at one time or another, exercise due diligence to transfer or update your storage methods to keep up with changes in technology.

DVD’s are good but a lot of people don’t know that basic ones might only last five years before they start losing data. If you go with DVD’s make sure you get archival quality to last. They cost a little more but if you check the media store flyers they almost always have DVD multi packs on sale. I don’t think I’ve ever bought them a full price.

You organize images by placing them in individual file folders named for the images you have placed in them.

CD’s and DVD’s are still the best way to backup (archive) your digital image files … while it is true that hard drives are very inexpensive, but in the computer biz, there are only two kinds of hard drives … those that have failed and those that are about to fail.
