How many digital photos are taken each year?

lorenz_sell asked:

I’m looking for numbers on how many digital photos are produced each year and what happens to these photos:

- how many get printed,
- how many are uploaded onto photo-sharing sites,
- how many are emailed,
- how many just stay on a person’s harddrive,
- what is the most popular activity with digital photos,
- and how many just sit there unused?

I work at a school in IT support. In 2002 18 MB of photos were stored on the network. In 2006 18 GB of photos were taken. Yes by far the vast majority just sit there.

Personally I have just under 60 GB of photos, and I have printed maybe 50. I think that would be typical.

As many as there are grains of sand on the beach.
